BREAKING NEWS:  A Draft of the Senate Health Care Draft has been Released

Well here’s a little bit of good news. AARP Goes Into ATTACK Mode, Targets 11 GOP Senators On Behalf Of Seniors.  “Trumpcare proposes a $1 trillion cut to Medicaid alone, not to mention the huge changes to health care as far as insurance companies and drug policies. Trumpcare will raise premiums on older Americans, raise the cost of prescription drugs and provide less federal funding for older people in need.” The AARP has a very effective lobbying apparatus backed by 38 million members. If anyone can break this Senate, the AARP can. A good many members of the AARP are also Republican voters who can use their influence to pressure their senators to vote against this bill.

As always, call your Senators, Richard Burr and Thom Tillis to tell them to oppose this bill and the secrecy surrounding it.

And by the way, have y’all seen this ad for a candidate running against Rep. Paul Ryan in Wisconsin? It’s awesome. We need someone like Randy Bryce to run against Mark Walker.

Any suggestions on a candidate for us? Send them to randolphdem@gmail.com

THE BUDGET

Income tax cuts postponed until 2019 in NC budget compromise

“The tax plan in the budget, which is expected to pass the legislature later this week, would reduce the personal income tax rate from 5.499 percent to 5.25 percent. It would raise the standard deduction – the amount on which people pay no income taxes unless they itemize – to $20,000 for married couples filing jointly from $17,500.

It would also lower the corporate income tax rate to 2.5 percent from 3 percent.”

So they’re lowering the corporate income tax rate also. If they go any lower, taxpayers will be paying the corporations for the privilege of having them use the services we pay for.

“The conservative advocacy group Americans For Prosperity had called for bigger – and more immediate – tax cuts in a memo sent to budget negotiators last week. “Candidly, any tax cut proposal that cuts less than $471.3 million over the next fiscal year – not biennium – is stealing money from North Carolina taxpayers,” AFP state director Donald Bryson wrote.

On Monday, however, Bryson praised the budget in a news release, pointing to “$530 million in much needed tax relief for North Carolina families.”

If Americans for Prosperity is on board, you can bet it will be bad for working families. Sure, they boast of $530 million in tax cuts, but that shortfall in revenue has to be made up somewhere else. And where do Republicans always like to slash and burn? Education and social programs; the things that these families they say they’re helping need to most.

If you do the Twitter thing, check out the hashtag #sooee, as in calling the pigs, to see all the pork in the budget. It’s an amazing thing. They can’t give raises to teachers, but they can spend $975,000 to build a replica of a fort in Iredell County. Phil Berger commandeered 13+ million for a youth center in his home county of Rockingham.
