N.C. Reps. Ellmers, Holding show true colors during Tea Party shutdown

RALEIGH, NCAs thousands of everyday North Carolinians continue to suffer due to the effects the Tea Party shutdown of the federal government this week, Reps. Renee Ellmers and George Holding’s (R-NC) true colors were on clear display this week.

Yesterday in an interview with ABC affiliate WTVD Rep. Ellmers, who voted to shutdown the government Monday night, rigorously defended continuing to receive her congressional paycheck during the shutdown proclaiming: “The thing of it is, I need my paycheck.  That is the bottom line.”

Yesterday evening while U.S. House Republicans dug in deeper and continued to jeopardize the economy, at the wee-hour of 6:38pm (EST) C-SPAN cameras caught Rep. George Holding (R-NC) asleep while preceding over continued GOP grandstanding.

“We appreciate the fact that Rep. Ellmers is living paycheck to paycheck, like so many hardworking North Carolinians, making it all the more unfortunate that she refuses to earn her paycheck and work toward a commonsense solution to end this self-inflicted crisis,” Micah Beasley, a spokesman for the North Carolina Democratic Party said.  “But what North Carolina really needs are elected officials who won’t fall asleep at the wheel as the economy tumbles off a cliff due to this Tea Party shutdown.”
