MONDAY 2/20/17 CALLS TO ACTION: Presidents’ Day Edition

Good morning, folks. It’s Presidents’ Day and I can’t help but think that Washington and Lincoln are spinning in their graves at the state we’ve gotten ourselves in. So, let’s do something that would make the Founding Fathers proud: let’s protest!

State:

Call the Governor’s office.

Governor Roy Cooper – (919) 814-2000

Script: Hi! I’m a constituent from Randolph County calling. I’m concerned about Scott Pruitt’s appointment to the Environmental Protection Administration. Since he will not pursue the planet’s best interests, I’m asking Governor Cooper to make a public statement about our climate crisis and support efforts in in North Carolina and around the world to reverse the trend.

Support legislation that prevents presidential conflicts of interest.

Call all three members of Congress – Sens. Richard Burr & Thom Tillis, Rep. Mark Walker

Script: Hi! I’m from Randolph County _ZIP_ and calling about two issues related to presidential conflicts of interest. First, I support the proposed bi-partisan bill that requires congressional approval of Russian sanctions. Secondly, I would like _________ to make a public statement of support for bills introduced recently in the Senate and House requiring the president to disclose and divest himself of financial conflicts of interest. Thank you.

Ask Sen. Burr and Sen. Tillis to oppose Perry, Zinke, and Ross cabinet appointments.

Note: Ross vote is Feb 27, Zinke is March, and Perry is not scheduled.

Script: Hi! I’m from Randolph County, _ZIP_ and am calling Sen ____ to express my opposition to three cabinet appointments coming up for a vote.

The first is Rick Perry, Energy Dept. nomineefor his ties to the oil industry.

The second is billionaire Wilbur Ross, nominee for Commerce Secretary, who has deep financial ties to Russia.

And finally Ryan Zinke, Dept. of the Interior nominee, who supports opening public lands to energy development.

I am asking that Senator ___________ vote “NO” on these appointees. Thank you.

EMPTY CHAIR TOWNHALL in CARY

Indivisible Triangle Daily Call to Action is hosting a Town Hall Event on Wednesday, Feb 22, 2017 at 6 p.m. We have extended invitations to Sen. Tillis and Sen. Burr and other local representatives but it appears unlikely they will attend. We are following recommendations from Indivisible and the Women’s March to hold an “empty chair” town hall meeting. Our goal is to have some speakers and constructive discussion amongst attendees. We also intend to put out press releases, a political service announcement, and follow up with media to show to all that our reps will not meet with their constituents in spite of repeated requests.
