WEDNESDAY 4/12/17 CALLS TO ACTION: Sneaky is as sneaky does.

FEDERAL:

H.R. 1902, the Social Security 2100 Act
This bill will keep Social Security solvent for the next 75 years! Social security is in trouble, but it doesn’t have to be. This bill, sponsored by Rep. John Larson of Connecticut, makes changes in how benefits are calculated so that payouts will remain high enough for seniors to survive. To pay for it, a microscopic increase in payments–a .01% increase for each of the next 24 years will be phased in, as well as contributions from high earners. Right now, the wealthy pay no social security, but under this plan, people earning over $400,000 would have to pay their fair share.

STATE:

House Bill 780 – Uphold Historical Marriage Act

“The bill says that the 2015 U.S. Supreme Court ruling that legalized same-sex marriage across the country “is null and void in the State of North Carolina.” The sponsors argue in the bill language that it’s “clear that laws concerning marriage are for each state to establish and maintain severally and independently.”

Republicans in the NCGA are determined to make North Carolina even more of a backwards laughingstock. In the wake of the HB2 debacle, this legislation is proof positive that the NCGOP has absolutely no idea how to live in the 21st century.

It is my opinion that they are setting this up for another lawsuit to go to the SCOTUS, but this time Gorsuch the über-conservative will be on the court, making the possibility of marriage equality being overturned.

NC House bill seeks to make gay marriage illegal again, defying Supreme Court

Hello, my name is ___________ and I’m from Randolph County. I am calling to insist that Rep.____________ say “no” to this ridiculous, tone deaf assault on our LGBT neighbors. The SCOTUS decision legalizing marriage equality was the right decision in light of the equal protection clause of the 14th Amendment to the US Constitution. Do not help NC become even more of a pariah by endorsing this revocation of rights for LGBT citizens.

HB 543: Relief for Caregivers
As this bill notes, 1.7 million North Carolinians care for adult relatives who have limited mobility. HB 543 would extend employment protections such as retention of health benefits and pay for leave taken to fulfill these duties. Call early to support this bill. After passing its first reading, it has moved to the Aging Committee of the House of Representatives for consideration on Tuesday at 11 a.m.

UPCOMING EVENTS:

Lunch with Lawmakers – Friday April 21, 2017 Archdale Trinity Chamber of Commerce is having a forum to make Reps. Pat Hurley and Allen McNeill  and Senator Jerry Tillman available to answer questions from constituents. See the link for the official flyer from the Chamber.

Tax March on Washington – Throughout the presidential campaign, Donald Trump promised that he would release his tax returns “later.” Then, just a few days after Trump assumed office, his top adviser, Kellyanne Conway, said that he wouldn’t release his tax returns ever, because the American people “don’t care.” We’re here to say that we do care. Join us at the White House on Saturday, April 15, 2017, to march and show Donald Trump that he owes us transparency. Two-thirds of Americans are concerned that he may be putting his interests ahead of the country’s. Until we see his tax returns, we can’t know for sure. There will also be rallies in Charlotte, Raleigh, and Mooresville the same day. Visit http://taxmarch.org/ for more information.

March for Science, Greensboro – The rally and march in Greensboro will include short speeches from local scientists who work at North Carolina A & T, UNC Greensboro, and other local organizations. We will also be featuring performances from local bands Disaster Recovery and Viva La Muerte, and from kid activist Sage Advice. Supporters of science from across the Piedmont Triad will gather at this event.  To help costs related to the march, please contribute to our gofundme page! https://www.gofundme.com/marchforsciencegreensboro  Leftover money will be used to send deserving local children to a local science camp.

People’s Climate March –  Join us April 29th in Washington, DC to let Trump know that we won’t let him pollute the air and wreck the climate on our watch!  There is no denying it: Donald Trump’s election is a threat to the future of our planet, the safety of our communities, and the health of our families. If the policies he proposed on the campaign trail are implemented, they will destroy our climate, decimate our jobs and livelihoods, and undermine the civil rights and liberties won in many hard fought battles. It’s up to us to stop that from happening before it starts.
