THURSDAY 2/16/17 CALLS TO ACTION: To Russia, with Love.

Good morning! Just wanted to take a second to note that these scripts we’ve provided are just something to give you an idea of what to say when you talk to your legislators. Please feel free to edit, change, add or subtract from them as needed. If we mix it up a little maybe they’ll stop accusing us of being a bunch of paid protesters and robo-callers. I won’t hold my breath on that one, though. “Alternative facts” seem to be all they deal in these days.

National:

There’s been a lot going on with regards to Trump’s Russian ties. Our senators are not doing their due diligence by sitting idly by and not investigating Trump’s numerous ties to Russia and Putin. Keep holding their feet to the fire!

Script:
Hello, I am a constituent from ____________ and I am calling to urge Sen./Rep. _____________ to initiate an independent investigation into the Trump campaign’s involvement with Russia. I also want the Senator/Representative to call for Attorney General Jeff Sessions to recuse himself from the investigation, given his close ties to the Trump campaign. Please urge Sen./Rep. _________________ to call for independent investigations into the Trump campaign’s involvement with the Russian government.

Scott Pruitt, EPA:
I hear Susan Collins has come out against Pruitt, so he might be vulnerable. This might also be a way of communicating our concerns about climate change to our Senators, so I’ve tried to personalize the script a bit:

Script:
I am a constituent from Randolph County, concerned about President-Elect Trump’s nomination of Scott Pruitt to Head the Environmental Protection Agency. Pruitt would dramatically weaken the ability of the EPA to enforce environmental regulations, a significant problem for North Carolina given the recent issues with the coal ash leaks into our water. Pruitt denies that climate change is happening and that human activity is a major cause, and his inaction on this issue could cause irreparable damage to the Outer Banks. I urge _________ to oppose the nomination of Mr. Pruitt.

NC Bar Review of Berger and Moore:

It’s been recommended that we contact the North Carolina Bar Association to conduct a review of their comments about the recent NC Superior Court decision.

Editorial: Berger and Moore’s statement threatened court, NC Bar should review

Primary Source – Phil Berger’s website

You can probably just copy and paste this letter and send it to Kim Crouch, the Director of Governmental Affairs. Her email is kcrouch@ncbar.org.

Dear NC Bar Association Board of Governors,

I am a North Carolina resident concerned about the comments made by House Speaker Tim Moore and Senate leader Phil Berger about the recent Superior Court ruling on the law requiring Senate confirmation of Governor Roy Cooper’s cabinet picks. In particular, Berger and Moore seemed to threaten the three judges who reached this ruling, even stating that there would be “profound consequences” for reaching the decision that they did. They also implied that the judges were acting outside the law saying that the judges were “making law” rather than interpreting it. This is a serious accusation, one that undermines the court system. It also violates the prohibition against using their position to influence a judge.

Given these behaviors, it appears that Berger and Moore have violated several state rules; therefore, I am calling on the North Carolina State Bar Association to conduct a review of their actions. We must protect the integrity of our judicial system, and investigating Berger and Moore is the only way to preserve public confidence in our legal system. Thank you for your time,

Sincerely,
