THURSDAY 2/23/17 CALLS TO ACTION: Support a good bill!

When someone puts forward a good bill we want to make sure we support it and ask our legislators in Raleigh to support it also.
HB 99 Anti-Discrimination Bill

Police killings in minority communities. The systematic profiling and targeting of people of color by law enforcement across. Lack of specific diversity and non-discrimination training for police and the lack of a statistical record of police homicides so that the problem can be scientifically studied. HB 99 specifically addresses each of these concerns. Issues of systemic racial bias in policing have been felt for years in marginalized communities, and are reflected in those communities’ disproportionate rates of incarceration. This bill takes on new urgency as the NCGOP has proposed legislation that makes it easier to target and round up immigrants, and the Trump administration begins wholesale deportations.

Hi, My name is ________ and I’m a constituent from____________ and I want to voice my support for HB 99, the Anti-discrimination Act. It is important to remove racial profiling from police work in minority and immigrant communities. Officers should be trained in how to avoid discrimination, and police departments should keep statistics about police killings of civilians. I urge Senator/Representative ___________ support HB 99. Thank you.

Support Roy Cooper’s proposed increase for teacher salary.

Cooper outlines plan to raise NC teacher pay to national average

Teachers have been treated with outright contempt by the NCGA in recent years, as budgets have frozen teacher salaries, increased the length of the school year, eliminated extra pay for advanced degrees, favored new teacher pay over that for mid-career professionals, and mandated onerous and poorly conceived requirements on schools and teachers. As a consequence, teacher pay fell to 41st in the nation in 2015, teachers fled the state in record numbers, and master’s programs at our top schools floundered. Roy Cooper’s budget gets us in the right direction towards putting North Carolina on par with national averages for teacher pay. This is the only way North Carolina can attract and retain top talent in teaching. We must, for our children and our future, ensure that North Carolina has top quality teachers.

Script:

I support Roy Cooper’s proposal to increase teacher pay by 10% over the next two years. It is critical that we attract and retain teachers to our state, where we now face a shortage, particularly in underserved communities due to recent NCGA budget cuts to schools and salary freezes for teachers. I ask Rep. / Senator ____________ to support this budget proposal.

NoDAPL – Standing Rock

Don’t forget the water protectors from the Standing Rock Sioux Reservation. They were forced out of their camp yesterday by police.  “The camp has been home to demonstrators for six months as they tried to thwart construction of the pipeline. Many of the protesters planned to go peacefully, but authorities were prepared to arrest others who said they would defy the deadline in a final show of dissent.”

According to the article, some of the protesters will move to other camps and continue the protest. If you’d like to donate to help their protest, click HERE.
