Voting Call to Action – August 16, 2016

Call to Action Graphic

On Tuesday, August 16th, the Randolph County Board of Elections will meet to adjust its early voting plan in response to the 4th Circuit’s recent ruling on North Carolina’s regressive election laws. The Court restored the original 17-day early voting window, but along with that removed the mandatory minimum hours County Boards were required to provide under the 2013 law. As a result, many County Boards of Elections across North Carolina have dramatically reduced the number of early voting sites, or are cutting back significantly on hours of operation at those sites.

Because an increasing percentage of voters are choosing to cast their ballots during the Early Voting period, we need to keep early voting as accessible as possible. Guilford County was able to get a favorable early vote plan because the community showed up. We need you to show up Tuesday, August 16 at 5pm to voice your support for a robust early voting plan.

The location is:

Randolph County Board of Elections

158 Worth Street

Asheboro, NC 27203

The Randolph County Democratic Party will ask the Board to consider the following:

  • Keep the four previously approved early vote locations (two in Asheboro and one each in Archdale and Randleman) and add a fifth location in Ramseur.
  • Stagger hours as needed so that we have accessible morning hours, as well as accessible evening hours;
  • Extend hours on days data shows are popular days to vote, such as weekends, and the last few days of the Early Voting period;
  • Designate one Sunday afternoon  of “Souls to the Polls” at one of the Asheboro locations.

Please come to the Board of Elections meeting Tuesday, if you can, and voice your support for the above plan. We need as many Randolph County residents present as possible so that we can make a strong and compelling case for open and accessible early voting in our community.

Sincerely,

Jim Meredith,

Chair, Randolph County Democratic Party
