WEDNESDAY 8/9/17 CALLS TO ACTION: They always go after the most vulnerable

Fight over right to sue nursing homes heats up

Next time be born rich!

“When you are trying to get someone in a nursing home, often time it’s stressful or an emotional time. Often times loved ones can’t take care of themselves, so for a nursing home to say in order to get in you have to waive your right is shameful,” he said.

“We’re talking about everything you may have a problem with — abuse, neglect, sexual assault, a wide variety of things — they are now saying you are waiving your right to full justice.”

As someone who had a grandparent who was mistreated while in a nursing home, this hits close to home for me. To strip rights away from patients and families during one of the most stressful events we face as humans is unconscionable.  The Trump administration is not only incompetent, it is hard-hearted and evil.

“Simply making the argument that we are a new administration and want to make sure corporations don’t have regulations that are forcing them to be accountable is not a good enough reason to change a rule that underwent extensive review.”

Under Trump, Coal Mining Gets New Life on U.S. Lands

“Afterward, protesters from the Sierra Club and other groups held a rally in the town square against the actions taken by Mr. Zinke during his first months on the job, chanting “Shame!” and “Liar!” and carrying signs opposing his policies.

But Mr. Zinke was not in public view. Just before the rally started, he was inside a nearby building, meeting with Bill Cadman, a vice president of Whiting Petroleum, a company that drills on federal lands.”

Coal is dead. That’s all there is to it. That the Trump administration continues to beat this dead horse instead of putting funds toward renewable energy and training for the people left behind by the dying coal industry shows how disingenuous and backward they really are.

Make some calls:

Call your Senators, Burr & Tillis.  Tell them to protect our public lands from coal companies who leave pollution and devastation in their wakes. We also need to protect some of the most vulnerable people in our society, nursing home residents, from deregulation that would allow large “health care” organizations to take advantage of their infirmity.

Senator Thom Tillis is evidently hiring chickens to run his offices

Check out the reception these Indivisible members get when just trying to deliver a “thank you for supporting Special Counsel Robert Mueller” letter to Thom Tillis’ office.

Commissioners asked to take down statue

“Dr. Wesley Fennell asked the Randolph County commissioners Monday to remove the Confederate monument from the Historic 1909 Courthouse, claiming it is a symbol of white supremacy.

Fennell was speaking during the public comment segment of the August meeting of the commissioners. His reasoning was that the Confederate soldier exemplifies a time in our history when slaves were treated inhumanely.”

Personally, I love the idea of a statue in honor of our abolitionist Quaker roots here in Randolph County. We didn’t want to secede, we didn’t want to go to war and many of our ancestors worked to tear down the institution of slavery. What do you think?

Below is an excerpt from William T. Auman’s book Civil War in the North Carolina Quaker Belt: The Confederate Campaign Against Peace Agitators, Deserters and Draft Dodgers that tells a lot about our Randolph County ancestors and how they weren’t as dedicated to the Lost Cause as we’re led to believe by our local rebel-flag-waving conservative contingent.

If you feel strongly about this, here are links to the contact pages for Asheboro’s City Council if you would like to tell the councilmembers your opinion on this issue. I also recommend writing a letter to the editor of the Courier-Tribune about it if you are so moved.
