If anyone tries to tell you that the ACA was created and passed in secret, show them this infographic. As a matter of fact, go ahead and print it out, then staple it to their foreheads for good measure. 

It is looking more and more hopeful that there are some Republicans in the Senate who realize that this bill will literally kill the very people who voted for them.  Thank Heaven for small miracles! Still, that doesn’t give us leave to stop calling, writing, Tweeting, Facebooking, emailing and visiting our Congress Critters.

Recently a letter was sent to Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell and Minority Leader Chuck Schumer.  This letter, signed by 40 economists, six of whom are Nobel laureates, outlined their opposition to the Senate health care bill.  “At a time when economic change is making life more difficult for all but the relatively well-to-do, denying people to access health insurance is a giant step in the wrong direction,” the letter reads. “The goal should be to hold down health costs and increase access to affordable, quality health coverage for all. Unfortunately, the Better Care Reconciliation Act threatens reduced coverage and higher costs for those who continue to have it.”

SCRIPT: Hi, I’m calling from __________, NC. I want to urge the Senator to vote NO on the BCRA recently put forward by the Senate. This bill is badly thought-out and plainly cruel. The Congressional Budget Office has determined it will take health insurance away from 22-24 million Americans. Americans need more and better coverage at a lower rate. This bill does the exact opposite. Can you tell me how the Senator plans to vote on the bill so that I will know how to vote when the Senator comes up for reelection? Thank you for your time.

ALSO FROM YESTERDAY AFTERNOON: The General Assembly has decided to wait until the new session starts to try and gerrymander the courts. It’s a short reprieve, but don’t get too comfortable.

Judicial maps won’t be redrawn this session

GERRYMANDERING THE JUDICIARY

I mentioned yesterday that the General Assembly is tinkering with the court system in our fair state. Their recent budget cut 1/3 of the funding from Attorney General Josh Stein’s office. He will have to lay off nearly half the staff in his office. The Republican-run GA is also working to make it harder for judges to waive court costs for indigent people. Just yesterday we found out that they’re going to try their hand at gerrymandering the judiciary. You heard me right, they want to break up the districts and reconfigure them. Bet you can’t guess why. Mostly because the court districts they want to break up are the ones that keep ruling against Republicans and their unconstitutional attempts at controlling the state.

“Burr said the districts weren’t drawn with racial considerations, promoting Rep. Grier Martin, a Democrat from Raleigh, to ask if they were drawn with partisan considerations.

“There’s some reason these lines are as squiggly as they are,” Martin said. “Was the motivation to gain partisan advantage or is partisan advantage a pure accident?”

We all know what they’re up to. You can’t tell me that Justin Burr is soooo concerned with fairness in the court system when he has been one of the perpetrators of one of the worst cases of gerrymandering in history. Anything he says is immediately suspect. Republicans in Raleigh are desperate to hang on to the power they have so they can continue to drain our state’s coffers and funnel the money to their wealthy friends.

North Carolina legislature looks to keep power by gerrymandering courts – “In an interview with NC Policy Watch, Rep. Marcia Morey (D), a former judge, also criticized the change, as well as the less-than-24-hour notice given, since the legislature will be voting on the maps at 4 p.m. on Monday. “Why did we learn about this on Twitter?”

SCRIPT: My name is _______ calling from the Rep/Sen’s district in regards to the plan to gerrymander North Carolina’s court districts. We taxpayers have already had enough of our money spent on these time-wasting, unconstitutional attempts at consolidating power by Republicans in the General Assembly. I am calling to find our where the Rep/Sen stands on this issue so that I may know how to vote come election day. These ridiculous attempts at gerrymandering everything under the sun are a deal-breaker and I will not vote for anyone who supports them. Thank you for your time.
