THURSDAY 6/29/17 CALLS TO ACTION: Shenanigans in the NCGA

STATE:

TRYING HARDER TO CONSOLIDATE POWER

As if we didn’t know they’d try something like this. They are going to do everything possible to screw up state government before they have to fix the gerrymandered mess they’ve created. They’re stalling on redistricting and have been since their late night “emergency” sessions, which by the way were in contempt of court, last year. Now they’re going to drop this bomb and head off into the sunset for vacation while we have to suffer with the consequences of their actions. It’s time for the NCGA to remove it’s collective head from its collective nether regions and do some work for the people of North Carolina, instead of incessantly spit shining Art Pope’s bald spot. This sort of behavior is the reason people hate politicians so much.

House committee to consider impeachment proceedings against NC secretary of state – (This particular article seems biased and short on facts and clarity, but here it is.) – “Representative Chris Millis (R-Pender) introduced the PCS (proposed committee substitute*). The move comes months after he called attention to the fact (is it a fact? Other articles dispute this assumption) that Marshall was commissioning notaries public who are not legal residents of the United States.” FYI, this article fails to mention which committee will be taking up this issue,

From March 2017: Lawmaker calls on NC secretary of state to resign over notary IDs – Neither state nor federal law requires that a notary be a U.S. citizen. He or she must, however, “reside legally in the United States.” The issue appears to be the definition of legal residency.”

*COMMITTEE SUBSTITUTE — A bill offered by a committee in lieu of another bill
that was originally referred to the committee for consideration; technically, the
committee substitute is an amendment to the original bill. (In other words, shenanigans.)

Call your legislators and tell them to knock it off down there in Raleigh. Their brazen power grabs are getting old and it’s time they acted like adults and started fixing things that are actually wrong and stop further mucking up the process. Once again, this is why people hate politicians.

Representatives: Allen McNeill, Pat Hurley

Ask Governor Cooper to Veto Garbage Juice Spraying Bill!

Tomorrow (June 30) is the last day for Governor Cooper to veto House Bill 576 (allowing spraying of landfill leachate without an air permit) – can you make a quick call to his office at (919) 814-2000 and ask him to veto this bill, which would almost certainly harm nearby communities’ air quality and health.

That bill is especially relevant for Randolph County because it is going to grease the wheels for the permitting process at all NC landfills.
