Save the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau

Call Burr, Tillis and Walker

After the financial crash of 2008, one of the most significant reforms enacted by the Obama administration with the help of Elizabeth Warren, was the creation of the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, an agency that, among other things, protects consumers from predatory loans. To date, the bureau has saved nearly $12 billion for 29 million people. Not surprisingly, the bureau has been under near constant attack from Republicans who now sense a chance to destroy it with the advent of the anti-regulatory Trump regime. Heaven forbid we try to protect poor and middle class people from predatory lenders.  On Wednesday, Richard Cordray, who heads the agency, was grilled by GOP lawmakers at a hearing. They threatened legislation that would terminate the entire bureau. Let’s call and write to prevent that from happening.

SCRIPT:
Hi, I am a constituent from __________ and I am calling to urge Rep./Sen. _________________ to reject legislation that would threaten the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau minate coverage for pre existing conditions. This agency does important work in protecting ordinary Americans from potential abuses from big banks and corporations. Thank you for recording my call.

STATE:

Call McNeill or Hurley

HB 13: a waiver for new class size requirements.
UPDATE FOR APRIL 7: school systems across the state are preparing to slash arts and PE programs now. Save curriculum, save jobs!
We have called on this bill several times, and it has bipartisan support. From what we understand, it is being used as a negotiating chip in talks between the GOP leadership and Governor Cooper. Therefore, it is critical that we call Phil Berger and Tim Moore to urge them to make sure this provision is part of the budget. We are including their Facebook pages as well. Comments here might be noticed as well, but please be respectful. Some people have been banned from these pages, merely for expressing dissenting views. If you are interested in holding leaders accountable, you may want to screen shot your comments.

Why this bill is important:
Smaller class sizes sound great, until you realize that these new requirements, which kick in next school year, are completely unfunded. Schools would be forced to cancel arts and P.E. programs which have already suffered much under McCrory-era heavy budget cuts. Thousands of teachers could be out of work. This bill gives some relief and flexibility in meeting the new laws, and schools are unanimously for it.
Senate leader Phil Berger: (919) 733-5708 Phil.Berger@ncleg.net https://www.facebook.com/SenatorBerger/
House leader Tim Moore: 919-733-3451 Tim.Moore@ncleg.net https://www.facebook.com/speakermoore/
I am a constituent calling from ___________ and I urge Senator Berger / Representative Moore to support HB 13 by helping to get it to an immediate vote. We need to preserve arts and P.E. programs in our public schools. We understand that this bill is a part of ongoing budget negotiations, but important decisions about school staffing must be made now. Thank you for recording my call.

County Boards of Election

HB 508, a bill that would change the makeup of county boards of election in Stanly, Rowan, and Davie counties. Instead of being appointed by the party of the Governor, a majority of these boards would be appointed by the majority Republican County Commissioners. In effect, this would allow for further voter suppression measures such as closing precincts and polling places.

SCRIPT:
I am a constituent calling from __________ and I urge Rep./Senator __________ to oppose HB 508, a bill that would effectively give control over local election boards in Stanly, Rowan, and Davie Counties to the legislature, and not the Governor as has been customary. Please oppose any further erosion in the Governor’s power. Thank for for recording my call.

Thanks to RISE Together NC for today’s calls to action.
