WEIGH IN ON CIVIL RIGHTS DATA COLLECTION BY THE DeVOS DEPT. OF EDUCATION

The US Department of Education and Secretary of Education Betsy DeVos are soliciting comments on whether or not the DOE should continue collecting civil rights data on students. This data is essential for tracking whether students are being treated fairly in our education system. If you’re concerned about disabled kids, especially people of color being handcuffed in schools, about school violence, and about the school-to-prison pipeline, please comment. Comments must be posted by 2/28!!

For some context, see this Twitter thread from disability journalist David Parry: https://twitter.com/Lollardfish/status/835873706970853377. David says there is no explicit evidence that DeVos is planning to shift course, but given the Trump administration hostility to social science, evidence, and civil rights, why take that chance?

Sample comment: The Civil Rights Data Collection provides much-needed transparency and information in public schools. This data helps the department achieve its mission of ensuring access to equal educational opportunity for all students. Secretary DeVos must preserve, expand, and publicly share the results of the CRDC. This data will ensure that students of different ethnic or racial backgrounds aren’t unfairly placed in the school-to-prison pipeline. It will also protect students with disabilities to ensure that they are receiving a quality education.
