MONDAY CALLS TO ACTION: A Nation of Immigrants

Unless you are Native American, if you live in America you are descended from immigrants, both voluntary and non-voluntary. The fact is, most of our families came from somewhere else. We have always struggled with the question of religion, for some reason, but most of us make a good faith effort to be tolerant and loving of people who hold views that differ from our own. Donald Trump has torpedoed that with his executive order for a ban on people from certain Muslim-majority countries seeking to enter the US. Call your Congresspersons and let them know that this ban goes against the things we value as Americans: tolerance, diversity and loving your neighbor.

Muslim Ban (Senate):

Senator Richard Burr:

[Ask for the name of the person taking your call, in case they are rude.]

I am a constituent of Senator Burr, and I am asking him/her to condemn President Trump’s cruel and unconstitutional ban on people traveling into the U.S. from predominantly Muslim countries. In December 2015, Senator Burr correctly stated that such a ban would be a “huge mistake” and would be bad for national security. However, thus far, Senator Burr has been silent on Trump’s executive order banning refugees. Please tell Senator Burr to remain consistent with his original position and to condemn the Muslim ban. I would also like Senator Burr to condemn Trump’s executive order that allows Steve Bannon to attend National Security briefings. Bannon is a political appointee and should not be involved in making decisions about our country’s safety.

Senator Thom Tillis:

[Ask for the name of the person taking your call, in case they are rude.]

I am a constituent of Senator Tillis, and I am asking him/her to condemn President Trump’s cruel and unconstitutional ban on people traveling into the U.S. from predominantly Muslim countries. I appreciate that Senator Tillis has expressed concern about President Trump’s recent executive order on refugees; however, I would like him to speak out more forcefully against it. This type of ban has cruelly separated family members from each other and puts vulnerable refugee families at risk. It is not at all representative of American values. Please tell Senator Tillis to condemn the ban. I would also like Senator Tillis to condemn Trump’s executive order that allows Steve Bannon to attend National Security briefings. Bannon is a political appointee and should not be involved in making decisions about our country’s safety.

Muslim Ban House:

Below are listed the public stances of all North Carolina Congressional representatives. Here are three scripts, one for the reps who have condemned the ban (to thank them), one for those who have supported the ban, and a third for those who haven’t taken a public stance.

Against the refugee ban: I am calling Rep. ____________ to thank him/her for his/her courage in standing firm for religious freedom and the U.S. Constitution by standing up against Trump’s executive order on refugees. I would also like to encourage him/her to propose or support Congressional legislation that works to overturn the harmful effects of Trump’s executive order.

For the ban: I am and constituent and I am calling Rep. ____________ to urge him/her to reverse their current position on the refugee ban. The ban in clearly unconstitutional, and it will also do harm to our national security. Please tell Rep. ______________ that the refugee ban is not consistent with American values and will do significant damage to our country’s reputation.

No stance: I am and constituent and I am calling Rep. ____________ to urge him/her to speak out publicly against Donald Trump’s executive order on refugees from war-torn countries. The ban puts innocent people at risk and does nothing to make our country safer. It is also inconsistent with our country’s values. We have always welcomed immigrants into our country, and we are defined by our beliefs in religious freedom. Please tell Rep. ______________ to speak out against the executive order and to support any legislation that opposes it.
