FRIDAY 3/31/17 CALLS TO ACTION: The Weekend Can’t Come Soon Enough.

Thank you to RISE Together NC and specifically Peter Wilbur for today’s calls to action. It’s a long one, but well worth it. If you don’t know what’s going on, here are some links to help you catch up.

Michael Flynn in 2016: Immunity ‘means you probably committed a crime’

Michael Flynn is seeking immunity before he’ll testify to Congress

FEDERAL:

RUSSIA, RUSSIA, RUSSIA

The Wall Street Journal broke an explosive story Thursday evening: Michael Flynn, Trump’s disgraced former national security adviser, has offered testimony to the House and Senate Intelligence Committees in exchange for immunity. That is a tacit admission of guilt, from a man who scant weeks ago was at the center of Trump’s complicated web of associations. The Senate began its hearings today talking about bipartisan cooperation, but its GOP chair, NC Senator Richard Burr, has already compromised his independence by questioning the veracity of news reports about Russia and Trump at the request of the administration. What are the Republicans in Congress waiting for? What does Michael Flynn know? Will the committees hear from him? One thing is certain: the investigation in the House is fatally flawed. The committee chair, Devin Nunes, has blown smoke and possibly broken the law with his handling of questionable evidence. Nunes’ solution? Shut down the hearings completely.

So today, we are going to try a new tactic on Russia: flood the GOP members of the House Intelligence Committee with messages. We have included all the local numbers for each, since getting through to D.C. numbers is difficult. If they ask if you are a constituent, tell them yes: we all have a stake in ensuring elections free of the taint of a foreign interloper. Thanks to Joyce Wady.

SCRIPTS (choose one, or cut and paste a super script):

Hi, my name is ________, and I am an American calling Rep. ________ to demand the resumption of open hearings in the House Intelligence Committee. We need to hear immediately from Michael Flynn, Sally Yates, Jared Kushner, James Comey, and James Clapper about what they know. Thank you for recording my call.

Hi, my name is ________, and I am an American calling Rep. ________ to demand the immediate recusal of Chairman Devin Nunes. As a member of the Trump team, and because he went behind the committee’s back with questionable evidence, he has shown that he is unable to lead an independent investigation.

Hi, my name is ________, and I am an American calling Rep. ________ to demand the creation of an independent, select committee to investigate the administration’s possible ties to Russian election tampering. The chairman has proven himself unfit to pursue a thorough and impartial inquiry.

STATE:

HB2 Repeal
If you know enough to care, you have formed your own opinion of Thursday’s replacement for HB 2, HB 142. Many advocacy groups such as the ACLU and Equality NC see this as just more discrimination, while others, including some Democrats, think this is an improvement and was the best we are going to get under the current Republican supermajority. So what is the action? Choose your target, and let them know what you think of today’s events.
