MONDAY 3/20/17 CALLS TO ACTION: It’s Monday, all…day…long.

FEDERAL

Oppose Neil Gorsuch

Neil Gorsuch is a bad pick for the Supreme Court. His decisions supporting “religious liberty” threaten LGBT and reproductive rights. He has made a career out of overtly pro-business rulings, often at the expense of workers. His “originalist” ideology, shared by his predecessor Scalia, is extreme, conservative, and out of touch with human rights and the modern world. There are plenty of moderate jurists out there that could be truly consensus picks. Take this opportunity to remind Republican Senators how shameful you found their blockade of the centrist Merrick Garland.

SCRIPT:  (Thom Tillis is on Judiciary Committee):
I am a concerned citizen of North Carolina calling to voice my opposition to the nomination of Neil Gorsuch to the Supreme Court. His potential confirmation poses serious challenges to human and reproductive rights.  You should have deliberated the nomination of Merrick Garland. Thank you for recording my call.

Federal Budget:

Donald Trump’s budget is out, and it is a fever dream of every right-wing think tank and conservative commentator since Newt Gingrich placed his Contract on America. There are so many bad things in the budget, and many of them will likely change, but it’s important to let your representatives know that we won’t stand for the cruel, inhumane, destructive, job-killing policies they’re pushing. We’ll post a short script each day this week to address a particular issue raised by this budget. Let’s start with the most talked about of the cuts, Meals on Wheels.

SCRIPT: MEALS ON WHEELS

Hello, I am a constituent from ___________________ and I am calling to urge Sen./Rep. ___________________ to reject President Trump’s proposed budget. In particular, I am concerned about cuts to vital programs such as Meals on Wheels, which costs only a few million dollars a year and feeds thousands of home-bound seniors while also providing them with much-needed human contact. This program ensures that our vulnerable seniors receive healthy foods and actually help to contain healthcare costs. Please tell Sen./Rep. ________________ to reject any Trump budget that includes cuts for Meals on Wheels.

STATE:

NORTH CAROLINA GOVERNOR ROY COOPER VETOES BILL MAKING JUDGE ELECTIONS PARTISAN

The NCGOP can’t stop stripping every last vestige of power from the governor and from the people of North Carolina. HB 100 would make superior and district court races partisan again. Governor Cooper has vetoed this bill, but the legislature is threatening to override the veto and make it state law. Expect gerrymandered court districts to come soon, which will further undermine fair elections. Continue calls about HB 100 to protect Gov.Cooper’s veto.

Thank you to Republicans who oppose the bill:

Brenden Jones (Bladen, Columbus, Robeson): Brenden.Jones@ncleg.net 919-733-5821
Rep. Nelson Dollar – Wake co. Nelson.Dollar@ncleg.net 919-715-0795
Rep. John Faircloth – Guilford Co. John.Faircloth@ncleg.net 336-841-4137
Rep. John Fraley- Iredell Co. john.Fraley@ncleg.net 917-854-9793
Rep. Chris Malone- Wake Co. Chris.Malone@ncleg.net 919-715-3010
Rep. Chuck McGrady – Henderson Co. Chuck.McGrady@ncleg.net 919-733-5956

I am a constituent calling from (zip code) ________ and I am calling to thank Rep./Senator _________ for opposing HB 100. It is critical that judicial races remain non-partisan. Please use your principled voice to urge your Republican colleagues to join you in upholding Cooper’s veto of this bill. Thank you for recording my call.

Thank you to Democrats who oppose the bill:

Demand for Republicans who are supporters of the bill:

I am a constituent calling from (zip code) ________ and I am calling to urge Rep./Senator _________ to oppose HB 100. It is critical that judicial races remain non-partisan.
