TUESDAY 4/4/17 CALLS TO ACTION: Are you Merrick Garland? No? FILIBUSTER!

CONGRATULATIONS TARHEELS on your National Championship!

Now, on with the show.

Advocate for a filibuster for Gorsuch’s nomination by Wednesday.

Call: Burr & Tillis

Script: Hi. My name is __________and I’m from __________. I am calling to ask Sen. ____________ to  push for a more moderate Supreme Court pick than Gorsuch by joining a filibuster of this candidate. How does Sen. ___________ plan to vote on this extreme nominee?

(While you’re on the phone, go on to the next one…)

Voice your support of an independent investigation of 45’s ties to Russia.

Script: On another topic, I’m deeply concerned about about Trump’s ties to Russia.  I am asking that Sen. __________ support a non-partisan, independent investigation. Thank you.

Or alternately:

The filibuster is a vital component of the Senate’s rules. While it complicated Democratic majorities from acting in the past, it is one tool that a minority party can use to prevent overreach by the majority party. And Republicans are threatening to do away with the filibuster in the name of forcing through a radical, conservative nominee who could serve on the Supreme Court for 30 to 40 years. Republicans have already defied long-standing Senate traditions–if not actual Senate rules–by refusing to even hold hearings for Merrick Garland. Abolishing the filibuster would be further evidence that the GOP has no interest in preserving our democratic norms and institutions. Tell Senators Burr and Till not to pursue the “nuclear option” for Supreme Court nominees.

Script:
My name is ________________ from ________________. I’m calling to ask Senator ___________ not to change the senate rules and procedures on Supreme Court nominees. If Gorsuch does not meet the 60-vote threshold, what we need is not a change of the rules but rather a change of the candidate. The filibuster is a crucial component of the Senate’s deliberative process and protects the interests of both parties. If the GOP embraces the so-called “nuclear option” on Supreme Court nominees, it will send a clear message that they value their party’s narrow short-time interests over the long-term interests of the nation. Thank you.

STATE:

HB 13: a waiver for new class size requirements.
Smaller class sizes sound great, until you realize that these new requirements, which kick in next school year, are completely unfunded. Schools would be forced to cancel arts and P.E. programs which have already suffered much under McCrory-era heavy budget cuts. Thousands of teachers could be out of work. This bill gives some relief and flexibility in meeting the new laws, and schools are unanimously for it. We have called on this one before. It has passed the House, but is stuck in the Senate. School systems are making budgets now for the upcoming school year.

Call: Jerry Tillman or Rick Gunn

SCRIPT:
I am a constituent calling from ___________ and I urge Senator ____________ to support HB 13 by helping to get it to an immediate voting for its swift passage. We need to preserve arts and P.E. programs in our public schools.
